Featured story

One product. Three lives.

Assimil: from publishing files to digital products at scale.

Assimil's challenge was not simply to create an app. It was to give a traditional publisher the technological infrastructure required to turn its existing editorial production into a scalable digital catalogue.

The source already existed: structured XML files used in the publishing workflow for print. Holiwave designed a production system capable of ingesting that content, enriching it with audio, interactions and learning logic, generating complete digital courses, and publishing them as applications across mobile and desktop platforms.

The objective was not to reproduce books on screens. It was to transform an editorial workflow into a digital production pipeline.

Assimil

1The challenge

Turn a publishing workflow into a digital one.

Assimil had the content and the expertise. What it lacked was a system to turn that material into interactive software efficiently and at scale.

  • Reuse the source

Start from the XML already used for publishing.

  • Preserve editorial control

Keep the publisher in charge of its content.

  • Scale the catalogue

Make one investment that serves many methods.

2The infrastructure

Holiwave built the tooling that bridges editorial production and software production.

Structured XML is imported and transformed into a digital learning model. Content, audio, exercises, metadata and interactions are assembled through a controlled production process, then rendered by the applications for each supported platform.

The same editorial source can feed multiple digital products without rebuilding the course by hand for every device or operating system.

3From automation to industrialisation

Publishing a course became a process, not a development project.

Once the production chain was in place, adding a new Assimil method no longer meant creating a new application from scratch.

Import the editorial source, validate and enrich the content, generate the digital course, test it, and publish it through the relevant stores.

2014

YotaPhone

In 2014, Yota was preparing an unusual smartphone: a colour screen on the front and an e-paper screen on the back. Mantano ported its EPUB and PDF engines and worked with the specific SDK controlling that second display.

Display, interaction and refresh did not use the usual Android interfaces. The project reused expertise acquired seven years earlier on e-readers and applied it to a device nobody had had to design before.

Readium LCP

Jean-Marie Geffroy joined the Readium Foundation board in 2015, then the European Digital Reading Lab board in 2016.

Mantano developed the very first implementation of Readium LCP, a protection designed to be far less intrusive for readers. Rather than keep it proprietary, the company donated its source code to the Readium Foundation, giving EDRLab a concrete base for further development and adoption of LCP.
